Legal secretary enjoyed the theater

Dorothy Kaner, a retired legal secretary and former Staten Islander, died Friday in Westside Regional Medical Center, Plantation, Fla. She was 89.

Born Dorothy Salmirs in Brooklyn, she moved to Tottenville in 1929. She graduated from Tottenville High School and went to secretarial school before becoming a legal secretary.

She worked for three firms for the next 25 years, including the private practice in Manhattan where she met her future husband, attorney Charles Kaner, and later for Braisted & Braisted in Port Richmond. The couple moved to Grant City after their marriage, and later settled in West Brighton.

Mrs. Kaner retired in 1972, and her husband of 33 years, Charles, died the following year. She moved to Plantation in 1976.

According to her family, Mrs. Kaner liked to sew, cook, and travel extensively. She enjoyed going to the theater and in her later years, she would play Scrabble every day. She particularly liked spending time with her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

"She was a very devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother," said her daughter, Ruth Straniere. "She was very close with her daughter-in-law, Davida Kaner, and her son-in-law, former New York State Assemblyman Robert Straniere."

Her son, Wally, added that "She was a wonderful homemaker."

Mrs. Kaner was a member of the Pythian Sisters, the South Shore Hebrew Alliance and Temple Israel Reform Congregation of Staten Island in Randall Manor.

In addition to her son, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, surviving is a sister, Jeanette Glazer.

LOOKUP The funeral service will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Menorah Chapels, New Springville. Rabbi Lester Polonsky of Temple Israel will officiate. Burial will be in Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Graniteville.
